At the January luncheon, the Philanthropy Committee presented a slate of three major charities for Women of Nassau to support in 2025. The membership voted to accept the slate of Chandler’s Hope, Ferst Readers, and Gracie’s Kitchen as presented. The Philanthropy Committee prepared this slate of 501(c)3 charities based on our organization’s mission statement to benefit women and children in Nassau County.
The Committee will be working with the following organizations in planning for fundraising events and donation drives:
Chandler’s Hope is a nonprofit mobile ministry that distributes new and gently used clothing, travel size toiletries, snack items, bottled water and addiction resource information to those in need in Nassau County. Michele Holbrook founded this organization in December, 2023 in memory of her son who passed away from an accidental overdose

Michele Holbrook founded this organization in December, 2023 in memory of her son who passed away from an accidental overdose in 2020. Volunteers restock the hanging racks that have been installed in the dedicated utility trailer readying it for the drive to scheduled stops at distribution locations throughout the county. Chandler’s Hope collects money and other donated items to provide comfort and encouragement to those who are in need in our county.

Ferst Readers is an organization that promotes literacy by providing books to enrolled preschoolers of Nassau County each month from birth until kindergarten. The following quote from The Child Mind Institute expands on how vital reading is to a child’s development. “The benefits of reading to children include helping them build language skills, learn about the world, and develop empathy and emotion awareness. Reading together also provides an opportunity for parents and children to connect.” Well over 70,000 books have been mailed to children in Nassau County since 2016. The organization also reaches out to groups such as Head Start, Nassau County Public Library System, and Micah’s Place
to identify children who might not otherwise take part in this program.

Gracie’s Kitchen is a nonprofit organization which serves meals to single mothers, families, senior citizens, military vets, the homeless, and the working poor. Founded in 2010, Gracie’s Kitchen began in a facility in Yulee by serving only seven meals. Today, under the director of co-founder Maryellen Crocker and with the help of 17 volunteer teams from churches and other organization, Gracie’s Kitchen is open four days a week and serves between 3,000 - 3,500 dinners
per month at its site in a former middle school near the junction of SR 17 and A1A.
Women of Nassau donated $1000 to be a Silver supporter of the Barnabas “Empty Bowls” fundraiser and an additional $500 the day of the event to show our support. Several members attended this very moving affair. We salute Barnabas' amazing efforts which provide much needed help to so many members of our community.
At the October 2024 luncheon, WON members generously donated detergents for the “Families in Transition” program to provide to their participants. Over 80 containers of detergent were collected.
Way to go, ladies!!!
In May 2024, the Philanthropy Committee hosted an Afternoon Tea open to the public with all net proceeds benefitting Micah’s Place, the only certified domestic violence center in Nassau County. Many participants arrived in their beautiful spring attire, complete with bonnets or fascinators, to enjoy the individually decorated tables with tea service, the company of friends and new acquaintances, and the fun of a “Tea and Charcuterie” raffle. The generosity of this amazing group of women raised $4,450.00 for Micah’s Place.
The Philanthropy Committee invited WON members to attend an Open House/Tour of the “Families in Transition” Clothing Distribution Center on Monday, July 29, 2024. This organization provides clothing and supplies for all homeless school age children from K-12.
President Lynda Watson presented a check for $1,500 to help purchase new essential items to benefit these children. This is the result of your generosity and fundraising efforts.
FIT is one of the three charities our members voted to support this year.
A $500 check was presented to Sybil Purvis, founder of the charity “Pinky Promise” at our September luncheon. Sybil explained the nature of this organization “cancer doesn’t have a face unless it’s yours or someone you know” which is to provide women going through cancer treatment with some items to help them through this dark time in their lives and let them know someone cares. WON had decided earlier in the year to support this group as one of 4 philanthropic endeavors for 2023. The club has decided to provide this support as part of our ongoing support of charity organizations in our community.
A $1,000 check presentation was made to the Barnabas Center for their Empty Bowls program at the August luncheon. The club has decided to provide this support as part of our ongoing support of charity organizations in our community. Nicole discussed the many Barnabas programs and thanked the organization for their support.
At the June 15, 2023 Luncheon, several of our members generously donated items to be distributed to school aged children (K-12) who are registered in the “Families in Transition” program. This program offers clothing, shoes, toiletries and week-end boxes of healthy foods for children who are without a permanent home.
We salute all of you who have opened your hearts to donate items and/or volunteer hours for this charity, one of the top four selected by WON.

I humbly believe we have the best organization around and that we have successfully fulfilled our mission of enriching the Nassau County community by fostering relationships and generously giving. And because of the generosity of our members and non-members, we had another successful Country Hoedown, which brought in $16,000.00 for Micah’s Place. What an amazing accomplishment. Well done CSI team!! I couldn’t be more proud of our community impact.

At the December 2021 luncheon, the CSI team presented a $10,000 check to Micah’s Place. The
membership selected Micah’s Place as our charity for this year. Most of the money was raised by the Hoedown supported by the club and put together by the CSI team. It was a great success and all members are congratulated on their participation in the great event. Below is a thank you note received from Micah’s Place.
To all the ladies of WON:
Thank you SO much for having me at your luncheons, for showering our cause with kindness, and for the continued advocacy you show in the community. Aside from the two car loads of goodies, the group donated $450 in gift cards, too! Not even to mention the $10,000 from the Hoedown – absolutely amazing!! We are so incredibly grateful for your support this year; it
has been an honor to get to meet you all and get to know so many other members.
Best,
Cassie Ott
